Confocal Raman microscope Alpha300 RSA (WITec) combined with AFM imaging and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is suited for imaging of cells and tissues as well as high-resolution nanoscale surface characterization. It is equipped with excitation wavelengths 442, 532, 633, 785 and 830 nm.

Confocal Raman microspectrometer HR 800 (Horiba Jobin Yvon)) is suited for biomolecular imaging and nanoscale surface characterization. A great advantage is a variable space and the possibility of measurements in titration plates and crystallisation boxes. It provides laser excitation wavelengths 488, 514 and 633 nm.

Raman T64000

Raman microspectrometer T 64000 (Horiba Jobin Yvon)) enables both microscopic and macroscopic measurements using excitation lines at 488 and 514 nm in a unique experimental setup using a triple monochromator enabling measurements close to the excitation line < 5 cm–1) with the resolution better than 0.15 cm–1. It enables simultaneous measurements from 4 cuvettes in a temperature-stabilized carousel.

Raman

Raman spectrometer (home-build) equipped with the Spex spectrograph (Jobin Yvon) is suited for measurements from macroscopic samples (cuvettes with volumes from 5 μl). The cuvette chamber is temperature-stabilized with an external water reservoir (precision of 0.1 °C). It provides excitation wavelengths of 488, 514, 532 and 442 nm.

UV Raman

UV-Raman spectrometer (home-build) spectrometer enables measurements of resonance Raman spectra of biomolecules (proteins and nucleic acids) using the UV excitation lines of 229, 244 and 257 nm. The cuvette chamber is temperature-stabilized with a peltier element (precision of 0.2 °C).

ROA

Raman optical activity ROAD (home-build) spectrometer is suited for the study of chiral molecules, medicaments, proteins and nucleic acids in a water environment or organic solutions (cuvette volume from 40 μl and concentrations > 20g/ml). It is equipped with laser excitation wavelength of 514 nm and enables measurements in a unique spectral range between 50 and 3600 cm–1.

Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) spectrometer ChiralIR-2X™ (BioTools) in Dual PEM™ setupsetup enables temperature-stabilized measurements of chiral molecules including medicaments and other biomolecules in a water environment as well as organic solutions (using CaF2 and BaF2 cuvettes with volumes >8 μl and concentrations > 20 mg/ml) in the mid-infrared range between 400 and 4000 cm–1. It also provides the possibility of measuring solid samples or samples in KBr tablets.

FTIR Vector 33

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer Vektor 33 (Bruker)enables absorption measurements in the mid-infrared spectral range between 400 and 4000 cm–1.It enables the study of temperature-stabilized biomolecules in a water environment (using CaF2 and BaF2 cuvettes with volumes > 0.8 μl and concentrations > 2 mg/ml) or powders in KBr tablets. Attenuated total reflection (ATR) measurements using diamond or ZnSe and reflectance measurements are also possible.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer IFS 88 (Bruker) enables absorption measurements over the whole infrared spectral range of biomolecules such as proteins or powders in KBr tablets. Temperature-stabilized measurements are also possible.

Double-beam UV/VIS absorption spectrometer Lambda 12 (Perkin Elmer) equipped with a temperature-stabilized cuvette chamber enables very precise measurements of biomolecules in the UV/VIS spectral range.

Double-beam UV/VIS absorption spectrometer Specord 250 (Analytik Jena) equipped with a temperature-stabilized cuvette chamber enables very precise measurements of biomolecules in the UV/VIS spectral range (190 – 1100 nm).

Microcalorimeter

Differential scanning microcalorimeter Nano DSC II – CSC 6100 (CSC-TA Instruments) enables calorimeter measurements of proteins or nucleic acids in sample cells of volumes 300 μl and concentrations around 0.1 mg/ml.

Our labs are equipped with standard tools for handling biochemical samples, such as:

  • Vertical electrophoresis unit Protean Mini (Biorad) for preparation of polyacrylamid gels for native/SDS electrophoresis of proteins and oligonucleotides
  • Horizontal electrophoresis unit Protean Mini (Biorad) for preparation of agarose gels and the study of nucleic acids.
  • Electrophoresis unit SE600 (Hoefer) with a built-in heat exchanger
  • Transilluminator LMS-20 (UVP) using 254, 302 and 365 nm wavelengths
  • Cooled centrifuge Micro 220R (Hettich) using exchangeable rotors for 1.5, 15 and 50 ml tubes
  • Vacuum concentrator/lyophilisator CoolSave(Eppendorf/Scanvac) using a 4 l condensor and teflon surface for lyophilisation of aggressive acids
  • Thermomixer Confort (Eppendorf) for samples in 0.5, 1.5, 5, 15 and 50 ml tubes
